Government College University, Lahore is a public research university located in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. Established in 1861 by the British Government in India as a Government College, it opened its doors in 1864. Therefore Having attained the status of a university in 2002, it has become one of the top ten largest institutions in Pakistan with a student body of over 12,000. But It 32 academic departments, which divides into five faculties. So There five research centers focused on academic and industrial research and development projects.

The university secured its second position in the general category by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) in 2013. So It has the highest graduation rate in the country, with an average of 94.6% annually. Government College University is noted for its historical roots and attracts notable scholars such as poet-philosopher Allama Muhammad Iqbal, Nobel laureate Har Gobind Khurana and Abdus Salam, former president of both the United Nations General Assembly and International Court of Justice, Muhammad Zafar Ullah Khan. So Bilal U Haq, France’s Prestwich Prize winner in geology, the award-winning scholar and novelist duo of Bano Qudsia and Ashfaq Ahmed, and many others to study and become an alumnus of the institute.

History

Originally, the establishment of a Central College in Lahore was sanctioned by the British Raj in 1856, given that teachers are from Oxford University, Cambridge University, Dublin University HC or Durham University. Government College was established in 1861 when it was established by Professor of Arabic and Islamic Law at King’s College London, Dr.Gottlieb was “briefly affiliated” by the Brahma University led by Wilhelm Leitner. So By 1 January 1864, the college opened its doors in the palace of Raja Dhyan Singh Haveli inside the Walled City of Lahore, where it was an affiliated college of the University of Calcutta.

The first principal was Dr. Gottlieb Wilhelm Leitner, whose name is closely associated with the college. But In 1882, Leitner was instrumental in laying the foundation of the Panjab University, Lahore. Thereafter, the college will be affiliated with Panjab University for 115 years. So In 1997, the Government of Punjab granted autonomy and degree awarding status to the Government College in all matters

In April 1871, the college moved to a large bungalow near Anarkali Bazar. But In 1873, due to the rapidly increasing student numbers, its location was again changed to another house called Rahim Khan’s Kothi. It moved to its current building in 1876.

Old Campus

Located in Downtown Lahore, the Mall is located at the junction of Lahore and Lower Mall, surrounded by the main business and administrative areas, schools, colleges, and the old campus of Panjab University. But Main building w. So Purdon and completed in 1877 at a cost of Rs. 320,000. Therefore In the center of the main building is a 176′ tall belfry. Being built during the colonial era, the main building reflects the Neo-Gothic tradition, with extensive verandahs and high ceilings.

Kala Shah Kaku Campus

On 24 August 2019, the Kala Shah Kaku campus of the university was inaugurated which is known as the GCU KSK campus. But the campus is spread over 370 acres, which can accommodate 25,000 students, 1250 teachers, and 650 staff members. So there are 22 hostels available for accommodation.

But The new campus was formally opened to the students on September 24, 2020. So A bus shuttle service will operate between the two campuses.
