Established in 1861 by the British Government in India as a Government College. So it opened its doors in 1864. Having attained the status of a university in 2002, it has become one of the top ten largest institutions in Pakistan with over 12,000 students. It 32 academic departments, Which divides into five faculties. So there are five research centers focused on academic and industrial research and development projects. So, the university secured its second position in the general category by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) in 2013.

And it has the highest graduation rate in the country, with an average of 94.6% annually. Government College University notes for its historical roots and attracted notable scholars such as poet-philosopher Allama Muhammad Iqbal, Nobel laureates Har Gobind Khorana and Abdus Salam, Bilal U Haq, France’s Prestwich Prize winner in Geology, the award-winning scholar and novelist duo of Bano Qudsia and Ashfaq Ahmed and many others to study and become an alumnus of the institute.

Originally, the establishment of a Central College in Lahore sanctioned by the British Raj in 1856, given that teachers are from Oxford University, Cambridge University, Dublin University HC, and Durham University. Government College establishes in 1861 when it establishes by a Professor of Arabic and Islamic Law at King’s College London, Dr. Gottlieb “briefly affiliated” with Brahma University, led by Wilhelm Leitner. By 1 January 1864, the college opened its doors in the palace of Raja Dhyan Singh Haveli inside the Walled City of Lahore, where is an affiliate college of the University of Calcutta.

Old Campus

Located in Downtown Lahore, The Mall is located at the junction of Lahore and Lower Mall, surrounded by the main business and administrative areas, schools, colleges, and the old campus of Panjab University. So Main building w. Purdon and completed in 1877 at a cost of Rs. 320,000. In the center of the main building, 176′ tall, There is a bell tower. Being built during the colonial era, the main building reflects the Neo-Gothic tradition, with extensive verandahs and high ceilings. There is a large ground with the main building called the “Oval Ground”. In 2019, the grounds rename “The Leitner Oval” in honor of Gottlieb Wilhelm Leitner, the first principal of the institute.
