Fatima Jinnah Medical University formerly known as Balakram Medical College is a public medical university located in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. On June 30, 2015, the Ministry of Health of Pakistan changed the status of the medical school to a medical university, and the current president became the vice president of the university.

It is now a tertiary healthcare unit and recognizes by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan.

History

In 1941, Sir Ganga Ram’s family founded a medical school called Balak Ram Medical School, named after Sir Ganga Ram’s son. Soon after independence in 1947, the college closed and the school building abandoned. However, with the help of colleagues, medical expert Professor Shujaat Ali came up with the idea of ​​setting up a medical institution in the same place to teach female doctors. For this reason, Professor Shujaat Ali’s team requested Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah to approve the organization’s name after his sister Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah. Quaid approved the use of her name. The Fatima Jinnah Women’s Medical College in Lahore enrolled the first group of 39 students in October 1948 and was formally established in March 1949 by the then Prime Minister of Pakistan, Kawaja Nizamuddin.

Facilities

The institution’s library is equippe with all modern facilities that comply with HEC standards. So Library membership is free for all registered students. There are nearly 35 videos on different health-related topics in the library.

The library provides nearly 130 medical book CDs. The general book section including 700 textbooks is available to students. Plans are underway to network the departments of universities and hospitals and establish links with other countries and international universities. The library has free internet facilities.

The Audiovisual Department equippes with new computers and eight multimedia systems for lectures. The student dormitory consists of seven blocks. So there are about a thousand students in the dormitory. There are outdoor and indoor game facilities, a gym, and a swimming pool. The university provides seven buses for day students.

Ganga Ram Hospital

Sir Gangaram Hospital is located in the city center, close to the main road of Lahore and the Punjab Council. So It is the teaching hospital of FJMU. The hospital surrounds by a densely populated area that serves the west and south of the city and serves the neighboring areas of Lahore. The hospital has 700 beds, but the average number of admissions usually reaches 800. The complex covers an area of ​​314 trunk lines.

Admissions

So Fatima Jinnah Medical University enrolls 250 students every year. But 50% of the seats reserves by the federal government, and students from Sindh, KPK, Balochistan, FATA, PATA, AJK, and northern regions admit. So 23 seats reserved for friendly countries and Islamic countries as PTAP (Pakistan Technical Assistance Program).

Fatima Jinnah Medical University also conducts JCAT (Joint Centralized Admission Test). FJMU alumni have a strong influence in North America. The North American chapter of FJMU alumni holds annual meetings and participates in projects that help FJMC students, researchers, and faculty members. Sir Ganga Ram Hospital establishes in 1921 by the philanthropist Sir Ganga Ram on the walls of Lahore, who also donated a piece of land. The hospital moved to its current location in 1943 to cope with the increasing demand for healthcare services.
