COMSATS Islamabad University (CUI), formerly known as COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT), is a public university in Pakistan. It is a multi-campus university and its main location is in Islamabad. In the latest 2021 QS subject rankings, COMSATS’s electrical and chemical engineering ranks first in Pakistan. COMSATS Islamabad University (CUI) is part of the Southern Commission for Sustainable Development Science and Technology.

Overview

The university establishes by the Southern Commission for Science. And Technology for Sustainable Development (COMSATS) in 1998, and its first charter awards by the Pakistani government in August 2000. Palestine joined COMSATS in October 2015 and became its 23rd member state. SM Junaid Zaidi was the founding president of the university and continued to serve in the university until March 2017.

The position of president has been vacant for nearly three years. Muhammad Tabassum Afzal took over as president in July 2023. And accepted the task of leading the university after transitioning from the Information Technology College to a mature university with a new governance structure. Comsats conceived as Pakistan’s first exclusive information technology research institute. Previously, its name was COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT). And which transformed into a mature university called COMSATS Islamabad University (CUI) through a parliamentary bill in April 2018.

This university ranks among the top 250 Asian universities in the 2014 QS University Rankings. And ranked first in the national computer science and IT categories, and ranked first in the country according to Nature Index. According to the recent HEC ranking, CIIT ranks among the top 10 universities in Pakistan. It is also a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities. Its main campus is located in Islamabad, with more than 8,500 students, and its six satellite campuses have more than 30,000 students.
